WERE -1490-AM, Cleveland Heights, Ohio (OH). Unlike most stations of its time, WERE first broadcast on the FM band in 1948 at 98.5MHz. WERE-AM went on the air at 1300 KHz a year later. Both stations lasted under common ownership for the next fifty years, as WERE-FM primarily simulcast the programming of its more popular AM sister station over the next 24 years, where it went into separate programming as WGCL. The Circle Jamboree (aka, Circle Theatre Jamboree & Hillbilly Jamboree) went on the air on Nov. 7, 1953. It was a country show that was held every night in Cleveland, OH. The Circle Theater Jamboree was the only show of its kind operating in Cleveland, OH at the time. It was not aired over WERE in its early stages. The Circle Jamboree was held at the Circle Theatre, which was then located at E. 105 Eculid Avenue in Cleveland. The initial emcee for the show was a disc jockey (DJ) by the name of Tom Edwards, who worked as a DJ at WERE. He was later replaced by Jack Gale, who worked at WSRC in Cleveland, OH. Tommy Edwards was born on Mar. 27, 1923, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After getting his start in radio at Spencer, Iowa, station KICD in 1945, he worked for a time at WOKY in Milwaukee before settling at WERE in 1951. Although known mostly as a country DJ, Tommy Edwards had an able rock connection.
